Tapco Centre for development and innovation foundation is a Kenyan non-profit organisation dedicated to advancing equitable access to quality, inclusive, and affordable eye health services for underserved and marginalised communities. Founded by a female clinician and community development practitioner, TCDI works to eliminate avoidable blindness and visual impairment by delivering community-centred eye care that restores dignity, independence, and opportunity. The organisation envisions a society where every person regardless of gender, disability, age, income, or location can access the eye care they need to live healthy, productive, and fulfilling lives.
Our work is anchored on three interconnected pillars: Disability Inclusion, Gender Equality, and Climate Adaptation. Guided by the principle of "Nothing About Us Without Us," TCDI actively involves women and persons with disabilities in the design, implementation, and evaluation of programmes, including as Community Eye Health Workers and advocates. Through solar-powered mobile eye clinics, accessible vision centres, and community outreach, we provide vision screening, spectacle dispensing, low-vision rehabilitation, glaucoma screening, cataract referral, school eye health programmes, and management of climate-related eye conditions, while strengthening local health systems through training, research, advocacy, and technical assistance.
To ensure long-term sustainability and greater impact, TCDI operates a blended model comprising Tapco Centre for development and innovation foundation which leads our non-profit programmes, and Tapco Impact Development Initiative (TID), our social enterprise arm. Revenue generated through affordable eye care services, optical products, and technical consulting helps subsidise services for vulnerable populations and supports programme expansion. Working in partnership with county governments, health facilities, organisations of persons with disabilities, schools, development partners, and communities, TCDI is building a scalable and inclusive eye health system that leaves no one behind.
A community where every person, regardless of who they are or where they live, has access to eye care that restores not just sight but dignity, opportunity, and hope and where no barrier, whether physical, attitudinal, informational, or systemic, stands between any person and the care they deserve.
To deliver gender-transformative, disability-inclusive, and climate-adaptive eye care to underserved communities co-designed with the people we serve, removing every barrier to access, and restoring sight as a pathway to dignity, economic opportunity, and lasting hope.
